MOVE FAT POTATO — Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what personal data the MOVE FAT POTATO mobile app (the “App”) collects, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have. It applies to the App on both iOS and Android.

2) Information we collect

2.1 Account data

• Username
• Email address (from your sign-in provider)
• Internal user identifier
• A sign-in identifier from your authentication provider (Google or Apple) used to log you in

2.2 Location data

The App’s exploration map and territory features are built on your device’s precise location (GPS). With your permission, the App collects location:

• While you use the App (foreground), to show your position and reveal the map as you move; and
• In the background, including when the App is closed (“Allow all the time”), so your walks continue to reveal the map and hold territory without you having to open the App.

To provide these features, we store a history of the approximate grid areas (roughly a 100 m grid) you have visited and the tiles you have claimed on our servers. We do not use location for advertising, and we do not sell location data. Background location collection is optional — the App works without it, with reduced map updates.

2.3 Health & fitness data

With your explicit permission, the App reads your step count to power progress tracking, achievements, and leaderboards, from:

• Apple Health (HealthKit) on iOS, and
• Health Connect on Android.

Where you grant the relevant permissions, this may include reading historical step data and reading steps in the background. Health/fitness data is used only to provide App features; it is never used for advertising, marketing, or profiling, and is never sold.

2.4 Device & notification data

If you enable notifications, we store a push notification token (from Apple Push Notification service or Firebase Cloud Messaging) so we can send you alerts such as sync reminders, territory-raid alerts, and season updates.

2.5 Technical and diagnostics data

Depending on your device settings and whether you enable sharing, we may process limited diagnostics data (e.g., crash reports) to improve reliability and security.

3) How we use your data

• Provide App functionality — accounts, step tracking, the exploration map, the territory game, leaderboards, and syncing
• Send notifications you have enabled (e.g., reminders, territory-raid alerts, season updates)
• Maintain security, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot issues
• Comply with legal obligations (if applicable)

4) Legal bases for processing (GDPR)

For users in the EEA/UK, we rely on the following legal bases under GDPR:

• Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)): to provide the App features you request (e.g., account, leaderboards).
• Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): for accessing health/step data, precise and background location, and push notifications. You can withdraw consent at any time.
• Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): to maintain and secure the App, prevent fraud/abuse, and improve reliability (balanced against your rights).
• Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)): where we must comply with applicable law.

5) Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell your personal data. Data is shared only as described here:

5.1 Visible to other users

MOVE FAT POTATO is a social, competitive app. Other players can see:

• Your username and your ranking/step totals on leaderboards;
• The territory (map tiles) you hold and your team, shown on the shared map (only within areas the other player has themselves explored);
• Your username as the owner of a tile when another player taps it; and
• A notification naming you when you take a significant amount of territory from a team, sent to members of that team.

We do not share your precise GPS coordinates or your exact real-time location with other users; raid notifications indicate only that activity happened in a broad regional area.

5.2 Service providers

We use third-party providers who process data on our behalf to run the App:

• Google — sign-in, Google Maps (Android), and push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging);
• Apple — sign-in, Apple Maps/MapKit (iOS), and push notifications (APNs);
• Our hosting provider (currently Render, United States), which stores App data on our behalf.

5.3 Legal requirements

We may disclose data if required by law, court order, or to protect rights and safety.

6) International data transfers

Your data may be processed in countries outside the EEA/UK (for example, where our hosting provider or a service provider is located in the United States). Where applicable, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs), and we take additional measures as needed to protect your data.

7) Data retention

• Account, step, location and territory data: retained while your account is active.
• After deletion: your account and associated data — including your step history and your stored location/territory history — are deleted, unless we must retain some information to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes.

8) Your rights (EEA/UK)

If you are in the EEA/UK, you may have the right to:

• Access your data
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your data (“right to be forgotten”)
• Restrict or object to processing
• Data portability
• Withdraw consent at any time (this does not affect processing already performed)

9) Managing your permissions

You can review or revoke any permission at any time. Some features may be limited if you do.

On iOS

• Health: Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → MOVE FAT POTATO
• Location: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → MOVE FAT POTATO (choose “While Using”, “Always”, or “Never”)
• Notifications: Settings → Notifications → MOVE FAT POTATO

On Android

• Steps (Health Connect): open Health Connect → App permissions → MOVE FAT POTATO
• Location: Settings → Location or Settings → Apps → MOVE FAT POTATO → Permissions → Location (choose “Allow all the time”, “Allow only while using the app”, or “Don’t allow”)
• Notifications: Settings → Apps → MOVE FAT POTATO → Notifications

10) Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data.

11) Children

The App is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). If you believe a child has provided personal data, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

12) Complaints

If you are in the EEA/UK, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We encourage you to contact us first so we can try to resolve your concern.

13) Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, when appropriate, notify you in the App.
